Generational Divide

Tarneit, Victoria
2024
The suburb of Tarneit is located on the lands of the Boonwurrung people and is dentified as one of outer Melbourne’s fastest growing areas. Site visits, interviews with residents, news articles and key information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2021 Census has guided my strategy towards reimagining what Tarneit (and fringe suburbs) could be.

Tarneit is a city of aspirations with its infrastructure and architecture reflecting the ambition of the Australian Dream. Yet, there are shortcomings. The dream is a mirage, a construct of developer greed and clever marketing.

This project observes the way Tarneit's diverse population utilises the garage. The garage exists as an other space - a bedroom, a kitchen, a butcher, a childcare. What can we learn from Tarneit?
